Making Rudders

The rudders are clamped while the epoxy cures.

Layers of UD carbon are used to add strength. I like the light weight result of Bernd's rudder design, it is quite tricky to do though as once you start applying glue/resin the clock is ticking, the picture above is of the second rudder which I was more happy with. The first one took me 2 attempts to get right as the plywood did not bend as easily as expected.

  1. Hi
Very beautiful looking work you are doing.
I try to build the same rudders. Broke 2 of them, because the ply wouldn't bent in the needed radius without breaking near the glued edge. Did you make any changes to the plan to get the rudders finished?
    Friendly regards from Germany

    1. Hi Hardy
I had the same problem. What I did in the end was reduce the angle a bit in the jig by adding two 10mm thick strips of wood to the top sides of the inside of the jig. This closed the angle up just enough to allow the ply to bend properly.

    2. In the picture you can see one of the strips of wood taped to the jig.
