Fibreglass

I am part way through applying fibreglass on the deck and cabin. It is slower progress than the bottom of the hull due to the more complex shapes, however the warm and dry weather at the moment makes it easier to get a good result.

Here are some photos of cloth laid out ready to go.

As I mentioned in earlier comments, there are different methods to apply the cloth. It has been a good learning curve by doing the relatively simple shape of the bottom of the boat before doing the top as the top is harder to do. But I am getting the hang of it. What works for me is to cut the cloth to length and spread it out smooth over the surface and tape the over hanging edges in place and cut for corners etc before putting any epoxy onto it. Then just wet out the cloth  in one direction, coming back where I started with a sharp blade to trim when it is starting to gel.

I have been surprised by how you can get the cloth to go over very tight radius edges without getting air bubbles if done carefully.

  1. Rodney, you will fly through the second hull, with all this practise. Plus, you can read back through this blog and see all the photos, if you forgot how to do something. i just did go back through a lot of it, and it certainly becomes obvious how much work has gone in here. Great stuff

I must admit to a motive in going back through these pages, and since i couldnt find what I was looking for I'll ask if you dont mind. When you did that big cove on the underside, did it have multiple glass tape layers as well, prior to you glassing the whole underside of the hull?

Ive got something similar ( the underside of the bridge deck where it meets the hulls on each side) and Im wondering how best to approach it. Plans call for tape as well as glass overall.

    keep up the great work

  2. Hi Bryan. Thanks. Yeah it looks like a lot of work when you see all the work combined but when you break it down into small jobs it doesn't seem as much.

As for the big cove, there is only one layer of glass on the outside. The cove itself is very strong, I wet out the area first with epoxy and then put the filleting blend over the top with quite a large radius, then the fibreglass over that. I think it would be strong enough for the 480. I guess if you wanted a bit more strength you could glass on the inside of join in the cabin.
